Japanese phone numbers: using a number from abroad

Understand Japanese phone numbers, +81 formatting, local and mobile types, activation requirements and using an eligible virtual number from abroad.

A Japanese phone number uses country code +81. Before choosing one, check its actual call and SMS capabilities and the identity or address requirements shown for that number. A Japanese prefix alone does not establish eligibility for every use.

Understand the number format

Japan's domestic numbers often start with a national prefix 0. In the usual international format, +81 replaces that national prefix: a Tokyo prefix written 03 domestically is written +81 3 internationally. Copy the complete number provided in your account rather than reconstructing it from a partial example.

If a form already selects Japan or +81, follow its instructions for the remaining digits. Do not add +81 twice or keep the domestic 0 when the form expects the international national number.

Local, mobile and online access

Geographic numbers are associated with an area; mobile numbers belong to different number ranges. Internet-based access describes how you use your Blacktel account, not a guarantee that a number is classified as mobile.

Choose from the number types currently offered in the Japanese number search. Check Calls, SMS or Calls + SMS on the selected result. A Japanese local number should not be treated as an SMS-capable mobile number without checking its actual features.

Prepare for activation

  1. Open the Japanese number page and compare current types, features, rental periods and prices.
  2. Read the requirements for the specific type and your individual or business use.
  3. Where requested, create an address or identity profile in the signed-in regulatory section and provide the required supporting information.
  4. Submit the required profile for review if requested. Address-only and identity-profile requirements are different paths.
  5. Use an approved matching profile when the purchase flow requests one, then confirm the number's active status before using it.

Using the number while outside Japan

Your Blacktel inbox and supported calling tools are accessed over the internet. That does not remove the selected number's address, identity or use restrictions. If a Japanese address is required, use a genuine qualifying address and matching documents.

For another app, use its accepted number type and current registration instructions. Keep your number active if it remains linked to that account. For mobile data while visiting Japan, compare an eSIM separately.

Questions and answers

Is every +81 number able to receive text messages?

No. Check the SMS capability shown for the actual number. Country code and area code do not establish that feature.

Can anyone abroad rent a Japanese local number?

Eligibility depends on the selected number's current requirements. Online access does not remove a local-address or documentation requirement.
