Change your WhatsApp or Telegram number and keep access

Prepare to change your WhatsApp or Telegram number. Follow each app's number-change process, protect chats and update access before releasing the old number.

Use the app's built-in number-change feature when you want to move an existing account to a new number. Creating a separate account with new digits is a different action. Prepare while your current account is still accessible.

Before you change anything

  • Keep the current app signed in and make sure you can receive the new number's verification challenge.
  • If you are also changing phones, plan the chat backup or transfer separately. Number changes and device transfers are different steps.
  • Check recovery settings and protect account access with the security options offered by the app.
  • Keep the old number active until the change is complete and other accounts linked to it have also been updated.

Change a number in WhatsApp

  1. On the phone where your existing WhatsApp account is active, open Settings, Account and Change number.
  2. Enter the old and new numbers with their correct country codes, then follow the account-change and contact-notification options.
  3. Verify the new number using the method WhatsApp offers.
  4. Check the transferred account information and chats. Create a fresh backup under the new number if you use backups.
  5. If you are also moving to a new phone, follow WhatsApp's chat-transfer instructions after the required number-change steps.

Change a number in Telegram

  1. In the existing signed-in Telegram app, open Settings and tap the current phone number.
  2. Choose Change Number, enter the new number and complete the confirmation Telegram presents.
  3. Check your account, contacts and cloud chats after the change. Review active devices and phone-number visibility settings.
  4. If Telegram says the new number already has an account, follow its official guidance before continuing. Do not delete an account casually, because deletion has separate consequences.

After moving to the new number

Update other services that still use the old number for sign-in or recovery, and notify contacts where needed. Check the new number's renewal date if it is rented. Releasing the old number does not remove it automatically from every other account.

If you are already locked out, start with the app's account-recovery instructions or an existing signed-in device. The standard number-change procedure assumes access to the current account; purchasing new digits alone does not restore an old account.

Questions and answers

Should I create a new account instead?

Use Change number when moving the existing account. A second account is separate and does not automatically inherit chats, groups or account settings.

Do I need to keep paying for the old number forever?

After completing the changes, checking access and removing the old number from other linked accounts, review its cancellation or expiry terms. Keep the new linked number active.
