German phone numbers: using a number from abroad

Learn German +49 phone number formatting, local and mobile differences, activation requirements and using an eligible virtual number from abroad.

German phone numbers use +49 internationally. Choose a number by its area, supported calls and SMS, and current activation requirements. Online access is useful abroad, while eligibility still depends on the number you select.

Dialing a German number correctly

Germany uses a domestic national prefix 0. In the usual international format, replace that prefix with +49: Berlin's domestic prefix 030 becomes +49 30. German area codes and subscriber numbers vary in length, so copy the full assigned number rather than assuming a fixed digit count.

When a form has a separate Germany country selector, follow its requested format for the remaining digits. Check that you have not entered the country code twice.

Local numbers and mobile numbers differ

A geographic number is associated with a German local area. Mobile numbers use separate ranges, and there are other categories such as national and toll-free numbers. Access through an internet browser does not change a number's classification.

Check the capabilities shown on the selected Blacktel result. Choose Calls + SMS if you need both and that option is available. A German local number should not be assumed to receive SMS just because it has a +49 prefix.

Choose and activate a suitable number

  1. Open German numbers and compare the currently available areas, number types and capabilities.
  2. Check the rental period, renewal price and call or SMS usage rates.
  3. Read the identity and address requirements for the exact selection and your individual or business use.
  4. If requested, complete the address or identity profile in your signed-in regulatory area and submit it for review.
  5. Select the appropriate approved profile when required, then wait for the number to show as active before testing its supported features.

Using a German number outside Germany

Use a suitable internet connection to open your Blacktel number in the Webphone or account. This can separate customer or work contact from your personal mobile number, but it does not provide mobile data by itself.

An address requirement may refer to Germany or to the geographic area associated with the number. Follow the displayed requirement and use matching genuine information. Check an app's accepted number types before relying on it for registration.

Questions and answers

Does a German virtual number include a mobile data plan?

No. A number rental and an eSIM data plan are separate products. Choose a data plan separately if you need mobile internet.

Do all German numbers have the same document requirements?

Requirements vary by number type, location and intended use. Read the current requirements displayed with the selected number.
