Free virtual numbers vs private numbers

Compare free shared phone numbers and private virtual numbers. Learn how inbox access, number ownership, costs and everyday use differ.

Choose a shared free number for non-sensitive trials. Choose your own private virtual number when you need a personal inbox, ongoing conversations or a number you can keep renewing.

What is a free shared number?

Blacktel Free Phone provides shared numbers and a shared receiving inbox. Other visitors can read messages delivered there. The free service has its own wallet and usage limits; it does not give you exclusive control of a number.

It is useful for trying the browser tools or receiving content that you intend to make public. Do not use a shared inbox for private conversations, passwords, payment details or important account recovery.

What changes with a private virtual number?

  • The rented number is assigned to your Blacktel account while it remains active. Incoming messages appear in your account instead of the public Free Phone inbox.
  • Choose the country and the capabilities you need: calls, SMS or both. A call-only number does not become SMS-enabled simply because it is private.
  • You can continue using the same number by renewing it under its current terms. Rental and communication costs are shown separately.
  • Some numbers require identity details, an address or reviewed documents before activation. Check the selected number's requirements before renting.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether anyone else may read the content you plan to receive. If it is personal, choose a private inbox.
  2. Check whether you need incoming calls, text messages or both, then compare available numbers.
  3. Review the rental period, renewal amount, usage prices and any document requirements.
  4. Keep a number active for as long as another account or your contacts depend on it.

Price and privacy are separate questions

Free describes the price, while shared or private describes access to the number and inbox. A private number helps separate your personal mobile number from online activity, but it does not make an account anonymous. Blacktel account rules and the requirements shown for the selected number still apply.

Questions and answers

Does Free Phone include a free private number?

The shared Free Phone service and renting your own private number are different options. Use the number search to see current private-number prices and terms.

Can I use a free shared number for verification?

Keep sensitive codes out of public inboxes. For an account you want to retain, use a number you control and follow the service's number requirements.
