Telegram lets you control phone-number visibility while using a public username for contact. Review visibility and discovery separately: hiding a number in the profile is not the same as removing it from another person’s address book.
Review visibility and contact discovery
Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number. Choose who can see your number and review the available setting for who can find you by it. Check exceptions and contact-sync preferences too. People who already know and saved your number may still recognize it.
Share a username instead
- Choose an available public username in Telegram settings.
- Use the username or its t.me link when sharing contact details.
- Review profile photo, last-seen and group-invitation visibility alongside the number setting.
- Check the experience with a trusted contact rather than assuming one setting hides everything.
Keep the registered number under your control
A username is a contact route, not a replacement for the account’s registered number. Keep that number available and review two-step verification and recovery. When changing numbers, use Telegram’s normal change-number process while you still have access to your account.
Questions and answers
Does a public username reveal my number?
Visibility follows your privacy settings and existing contact relationships. A username lets people contact you without needing to share the number directly.
Does hiding the number remove the need for registration?
No. The privacy controls concern visibility; keep the account’s registered number and recovery access current.
